The pros and cons of leaving Twitter for good
As creatives, we thrive on connection, inspiration, and collaboration. Social media platforms like X (formerly Twitter) have long been essential tools for promoting our work, engaging with our audience, and staying in the loop. But ever since Elon Musk took over, the platform has felt like it's shifting from a vibrant community to a chaotic battleground. With engagement stats dwindling and the rise of negative and propagandist content, many are wondering: is it time for creatives to leave X for good?
Let’s dive into the pros and cons.
The pros of leaving X
1. Less exposure to negative content
Since Musk’s takeover, X has seen a significant uptick in adverse and negative comments, not to mention an unsettling increase in general propaganda. The platform, once a space for thoughtful discourse and creative exchange, now feels flooded with misinformation and hostility. For creatives, this can be draining and demoralising. Leaving X might mean reclaiming your mental space and focusing on more positive environments.
2. Avoiding diminished engagement
It’s no secret that engagement on X has taken a nosedive. The platform’s algorithm changes, along with the sheer volume of content, mean your posts are less likely to be seen by your followers. This diminishing return on investment—spending time crafting posts only to see minimal interaction—can be frustrating. Shifting to other platforms where engagement is more robust might be a more effective way to reach your audience.
3. Aligning with your values
Musk’s controversial decisions and unpredictable behaviour have left many creatives feeling conflicted about staying on X. If you find that the platform’s direction clashes with your values, leaving might be a way to stay true to your principles. Choosing to invest your time and energy in platforms that align with your ethos can strengthen your brand and resonate more authentically with your audience.
The cons of leaving X
1. Losing a massive audience
Despite its flaws, X still boasts a vast user base. Leaving the platform could mean cutting off access to a large portion of your audience, including potential clients, collaborators, and fans. For many creatives, X remains a primary channel for sharing work, networking, and staying updated with industry news. The risk of losing this reach is significant.
2. Disrupting established networks
Over the years, many creatives have built strong networks on X. These connections are not easily replicated elsewhere. While platforms like Threads or LinkedIn are growing, they haven’t yet matched X in terms of the size and engagement of creative communities. Leaving X could disrupt these established networks, making it harder to maintain those valuable professional relationships.
3. Limited alternatives
While there are alternative platforms like Threads, Mastodon, and LinkedIn, none have yet fully stepped into the space X occupies. Each platform has its strengths, but they also come with limitations—whether it’s a smaller user base, less robust features, or a different type of community. For now, X still offers a unique combination of real-time interaction and diverse content that other platforms struggle to match.
The balancing act
So, where does this leave us? The decision to leave X is a deeply personal one, weighing the negatives of the current platform against the potential risks of stepping away. For some, the rise of negativity and diminished engagement makes the choice clear: it’s time to move on. For others, the platform’s reach and the strength of existing networks are too valuable to abandon just yet.
As a creative agency, our advice is to stay flexible. Experiment with alternative platforms, diversify your social media presence, and monitor where your audience is most active. If you do choose to leave X, do so strategically—make sure your followers know where to find you, and gradually build up your presence on other platforms.
Ultimately, the key is to stay true to your creative vision and adapt to the shifting landscape. Whether you stick with X, explore new horizons, or do a bit of both, the most important thing is to keep creating, connecting, and sharing your work with the world.
